Spend Restrictions

Givefront provides multiple ways to control spend on cards.

Spend Restrictions block unauthorized spend from happening. Spend Policies enforce receipt and memo collection after a transaction takes place.

Spend Restriction Basics

Givefront cards and budgets supports two main types of restrictions:

  1. Limit Restrictions: Enforce a maximum spend limit which resets on a defined interval
  2. Category Restrictions: Only allow spend from one or more predefined categories

In addition to a hard cap on spend, limit restrictions also support limit flexibility.

limit flexibility

This allows budgets and cards to specify a target spend amount, while still allowing some over budget spend.

Example

Joan is issued an individual employee card for spend on meals, transportation, and office equipment. This card occasionally needs to accommodate expensive office supply purchases at physical storefronts, so the limit is set to $1,000 a week.

To reflect her use case, Joan's card is allowed to spend on two different budgets:

  1. A personal budget for meals and transportation with a limit of $150 a week
  2. A shared office budget which only allows transactions for general merchandise with a limit of $5,000 per month

Joan could theoretically spend up to $1,000 a week on restaurants, but her spend would not be able to be assigned to the office budget. This spend would be flagged as out of policy.

Available Spend Categories

Restrictions can be applied to the following spend categories. Each transaction has one and only one spend category.

Warning

A transaction's spend category is automatically determined by the merchant category code (mcc) that a business provides to Visa. Occasionally, a business may use a generic or inaccurate category code, causing transactions to appear in unexpected categories. While we use the most accurate data available, we recommend double checking the merchant spend category to ensure they match your expectations.
